Local Dental Office Gives Back to Hungry School Children
Amarillo, TX – Family dentist, Dr. Charles Pybus, gives to the Snack Pak 4 Kids program, which is dedicated to ending weekend hunger for children in need.
Many people may not realize it, or may not recognize the signs of hunger, but there are a surprising number of hungry school-aged children who rely on their campus’ free or reduced meals and lunch programs to get them through the day. When the weekend comes, these children are left without food for two days or longer, in the case of an extended weekend due to school holiday.
As a family dentist in Amarillo, Dr. Pybus is devoted to the health and wellness of children and their families, which is why he chose to become a donor to the Snack Pak 4 Kids program. Dr. Pybus explains, “Our office has been as part of the Amarillo community for years, helping patients achieve excellent overall health and wellness. When we learned about the Snack Pak 4 Kids program, it seemed like a great way to extend our reach for the wellbeing of children in our area.”
Snack Pak 4 Kids is an organization that donates backpacks of food items to elementary, middle school, and high school aged children who live in food-insecure households in the Texas Panhandle. The food in these bags is specially selected to be easy-open and requires no adult supervision or assistance to prepare. These snacks and meals are low-sugar and have whole grains, protein, and other important nutrients, and are meant to keep a child full and confident when they are away from school.
Children are anonymously and discreetly given these snack bags, which is important to high-school aged kids, who can be anxious about revealing their needs for food items to their classmates. 100% of donations given to Snack Pak 4 Kids go directly to the children’s benefit. Hundreds of volunteers assemble every week to stuff bags for children to enjoy over the weekend.
“Our Amarillo dental office knows the value of keeping kids healthy at home and at school. We promote good oral health through routine dental visits, so kids can avoid missing class time for extensive treatment. Through working with Snack Pak 4 Kids, we’ve also learned how hunger can affect a child’s academic performance as well, and are happy to get involved with the program to keep kids healthy and thriving,” Dr. Pybus adds.
